Capetown - The Place and the People

We are now on African soil! This is a first for both Karen and I.

The air, the land, the people - one word: AMAZING!!

Already its been so worth the 40+ hours it took to get here. In spite of the time delays, our actual flights and the people we met along the way were fabulous. Our wonderful host, Tracey, picked us up from the airport and took us to her home that has a B & B suite. All I can say is that we are being totally spoiled and looked after. I wont go into too much detail, but it's really beyond anything we could have hoped for.

Views over Johannesburg

On the plane today coming from Johannesburg on the last leg of our flight, we met the Chilean GDOP Coordinator. We had a short chat in a line up but we agreed to connect once we get to the venue tomorrow. He was an older man in his 60's with good English, and he had with him a younger man probably in his early thirties. We look forward to connecting with them soon.

Once we arrived and settled in, showered and had a nap, we decided to take a walk with Nookey (?) one of the servants. She took us to a small store in the area where we were going to inquire about bus transportation. The owners of the store are from Greece and the lady was extremely gregarious and helpful. She chatted with us, and tried to help us out - then she told us to get into her car. She drove us to a beautiful garden area only minutes away called Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. See link:

[The Greek lady told us that this would be a great place to spend a half-day so we may do that at some point but she was specifically looking for a cab driver for us.]

She connected us with a cab driver named David, who could get us around fairly cheaply. So our day is pretty much planned for tomorrow. David will be picking us up at 8:30 am and taking us to the waterfront. We'll spend the morning there, and then we'll head to the Convention Centre in the afternoon.

Here's a sample of what we saw on the side of the road on our walk back home:
